Eyes are not just our windows to the world, they are also portals to our soul. This can be similarly said of eye health. With good eye health, we can enjoy beauty in its purest forms. We offer a wide range of quality eye care services to meet your various needs. These are supported by our pool of ophthalmologists who are experienced in treating both children and adult eye conditions, with the help of comprehensive diagnostic and surgical equipment. By adopting rapidly advancing technology, we are the first to provide a whole new solution to a common problem – the bladeless cataract surgery.
What is a cataract?
In a healthy eye, light enters through the cornea, passes through the natural crystalline lens and accurately focuses on the retina, sending clear, crisp images to the brain.
Eye with Cataract
As the eye ages, the natural lens inside the eye becomes clouded. Less light is able to pass through the lens and it becomes diffused or scattered as it reaches the retina, resulting in a blurred or unfocused image. This visual impairment can be frustrating as you go about your daily routine, affecting your quality of life.
What can be done?
Treatment for cataract involves a surgical operation. There are 2 possible methods for cataract surgery: a traditional method using manual surgical blades and a new method using laser.
The best and most common way to treat a cataract is to break and remove the old clouded lens during surgery and replace it with a new artificial one to restore your sight. Traditionally, a surgeon would use a metal blade to make manual incisions in the eye and remove the cataract by breaking up the old lens with high-frequency sound waves.
With more clarity and confidence
Now patients at Mount Elizabeth Hospital have the option of bladeless cataract surgery. Some of the benefits offered by such a surgery that cannot be achieved by traditional methods include:
The computer-controlled LenSx® laser automates the incisions with a high degree of precision. A perfectly-sized opening in front of the lens is created and the eye is successfully prepared for subsequent steps of cataract surgery.
More precise and well-centred capsule openings.
Instead of using a pair of handheld forceps to create the opening of the cataract, the laser uses the image-guided Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), which provides real-time 3D visualisation of the eye. This enables the incision to be perfectly shaped and centred according to your own unique eye.
Less ultrasound energy needed.
Recovery with this procedure may be quicker compared to other surgical methods since less energy is used to break up the cataract compared to other surgical methods.
The LenSx® laser has the ability to capture precise high-resolution images of your eye which are then used to aid surgery with exacting specifications not attainable with traditional procedures. This is crucial because every eye is different in terms of size, depth and curvature, all of which must be carefully mapped prior to cataract surgery.
