Experience
Dr Por Yong Ming graduated with honours from the University of Melbourne in 1997. During this time, he won numerous prizes including those in biochemistry, microbiology and Ophthalmology, and made the Dean’s Honours list for several years. He subsequently underwent basic surgical training in ophthalmology at the renowned Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom, before returning to Singapore.
Dr Por undertook advanced surgical training in Ophthalmology at the Singapore National Eye Centre, and completed this in 2006. This was followed by a corneal and refractive surgery fellowship with Professor Donald Tan, during which time he gained particular expertise with newer methods of corneal transplantation including deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) as well as Descemets Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK). These state of the art techniques improve outcomes for patients, by helping to reduce rejection rates and in other cases by promoting much faster recovery of vision.
Dr Por is also very experienced in the various forms of refractive surgery including LASIK and Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery. He applies the principles of this knowledge for his cataract patients as well, so that for them, the use of spectacles after cataract surgery can be minimised.
Dr Por is expert in both routine and complicated cataract surgery. He has extensive experience in calculating the lens implant power as well as performing cataract surgery in patients who previously had refractive surgery such as LASIK. Many of his cataract patients also had previous eye operations such as corneal transplants and retinal surgery.
Dr Por is also active academically, having published 28 journal articles in international peer reviewed journals and authored several book chapters. These have covered especially the topics of cataract surgery and corneal transplantation. He was also the Chief Editor of the Ophthalmic Paramedical and Nursing Handbook, a concise and practical guide for paramedical staff with regard to commonly used medications and commonly performed ophthalmic procedures.
Dr Por was a Clinical Tutor for undergraduate medical students while at the Singapore National Eye Centre, and also believes firmly in patient education.
