Dr Chen Weihao is a gastroenterologist at Parkway East Hospital, Singapore.
His specialties are inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) and intestinal ultrasound. He can also perform diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy (including advanced imaging techniques such as chromoendoscopy), and video capsule endoscopy.
Dr Chen was a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) where he set up the hospital’s services for inflammatory bowel disease and point-of-care intestinal ultrasound.
He graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and underwent his specialist training at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Dr Chen was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan Award to undergo subspecialty training in inflammatory bowel disease and clinical nutrition at Austin Hospital, Australia. He also trained in Germany to become part of the first group of local gastroenterologists to be proficient in intestinal ultrasound.
At NTFGH, he was a member of the hospital’s nutrition support team and was the main gastroenterologist responsible for the care of malnourished patients on parenteral nutrition as well as patients with short bowel syndrome and intestinal failure.
Besides his clinical work, he taught medical students from Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He was also a clinical preceptor to Master of Nursing students from NUS.
Dr Chen has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications in medical journals such as the British Medical Journal Open Gastroenterology and the POCUS journal. He is also an invited speaker at local and regional conferences about various topics related to inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal ultrasound.
