Dr Han Fucai is an orthopaedic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
He is skilled in a wide range of surgical techniques, including keyhole surgery, joint preservation surgery, and joint replacement surgery for the knee, hip, shoulder and elbow joints. His primary interests lie in complex sports and joint preservation surgery for the knee (such as cartilage repair and restoration, osteotomies, multi-ligaments reconstruction, revision ACL reconstruction and complex meniscus tears/meniscus transplant) and shoulder joints (such as shoulder fracture dislocations and massive rotator cuff tears).
Prior to private practice, he was the head of the division of sports surgery and medicine, as well as the division of shoulder and elbow surgery at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
Dr Han graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and received a Ministry of Health training scholarship for his orthopaedic training and further two years of subspecialty overseas fellowship trainings. He is one of a few orthopaedic surgeons who has completed three North American, UK and Europe fellowships, and is trained in three areas of subspecialty – sports orthopaedics and arthroscopy, joint reconstructions/preservation and fracture surgery. He first completed an American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine-accredited orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship at the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic, Canada.
Subsequently, he underwent a second fellowship in trauma/fractures and joint replacement surgeries at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, UK. He concluded his subspecialty training in Oslo University Hospital and Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center, Norway. Additionally, he was awarded an AO Trauma fellowship for his attachment at NYU Langone Health (Hospital for Joint Diseases and Bellevue Hospital) in New York, USA. During his stint there, he was involved in the care of high-level athletes involved in football, ice hockey, skiing and soccer. Upon his return to Singapore, he treated and continues to manage numerous competitive athletes with injuries involved in soccer, rugby, martial arts (taekwondo, mixed martial arts, kickboxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu), softball and floorball. He also holds a Fédération Internationale de Football Association diploma of football medicine.
Dr Han has more than 16 years of experience, having performed over 5,000 orthopaedic surgeries and procedures.
Besides his clinical work, he is a clinical lecturer and adjunct assistant professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, and maintains a keen interest in research and teaching. He has published papers in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters on orthopaedic surgery. He is an invited speaker and faculty member for numerous international conferences and courses.
He was a recipient of Excellent Service Quality Patient Service Award.
