Dr Shridhar Iyer is a general surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
His subspecialty interests are in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery (liver/pancreas/gall bladder/biliary/spleen) and liver transplantation, organ transplantation, surgical oncology and general surgery. He is also proficient in minimally invasive, general and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeries, and robotic surgery.
Dr Iyer was previously a senior consultant and group head of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the National University Health System, as well as the co-director of the National University Centre for Organ Transplantation at the National University Hospital (NUH). During his tenure as co-director, he helped strengthen the National Liver Transplant Programme of Singapore through the development of common protocols, allocation of policies, and streamlining of national processes.
He graduated from Grant Medical College, Bombay University, India and later became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. He received the Health Manpower Development Plan award to pursue training in liver transplant surgery. He has more than 25 years of experience in general surgery, and hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
With 18 years of experience in liver transplantation, Dr Iyer has played a pivotal role in the growth of the adult and paediatric living donor liver transplant programmes at NUH. His contributions as surgical director of the national liver transplant programme have been instrumental in enhancing the programme through the development of standardised protocols, allocation policies, and the optimisation of national processes.
His research and clinical work have resulted in more than 100 publications encompassing basic science, surgical techniques, quality improvement and benchmarking.
Dr Iyer is a founding member and past president of the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (Singapore) and the current president of the Society of Transplantation (Singapore).
Besides his clinical work, he is an associate professor in the department of surgery at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He also served as the programme director for the general surgery residency programme at NUH and led the first ACGME-I accreditation for general surgery residency outside the US.
Dr Iyer is a recipient of several National Healthcare Group Quality Pillar awards.
