Dr Kau Chung Yuan is an orthopaedic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
He has a subspecialty interest in hip and knee conditions include managing osteoarthritis, and degenerative and inflammatory conditions of the hip and knee.
Prior to joining private practice, Dr Kau was a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). He is currently a visiting consultant at TTSH and Woodlands Health.
He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is a fellow in orthopaedic surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, UK. He received the Health Manpower Development Plan award and did his training in adult reconstruction surgery (hip and knee) in Southampton University Hospital, UK.
Besides his clinical work, he is an adjunct assistant professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (NTU-Imperial College) and a senior lecturer at NUS’ Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is also a core clinical faculty member with the National Healthcare Group-AHPL orthopaedic surgery residency programme and an orthopaedic co-lead at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine’s (NTU-Imperial College) orthopaedic undergraduate programme.
Dr Kau has performed a high volume of unicompartment, as well as total and revision hip and knee surgeries. He was one of the early adopters to use the Oxford partial knee arthroplasty (PKA) system, and is a regional instructor on the Oxford PKA to train aspiring orthopaedic surgeons. He was an invited speaker at international forums, and is an instructor for arthroplasty at local and regional conferences.
He is trained in the use of robotics (MAKOplasty) and computer navigation for both hip and knee replacements. He is also uses the direct anterior approach to the hip, which can benefit early recovery in his patients after total hip replacement. He has been practising medicine for over 15 years.
