Dr Koh Choong Hou is a cardiologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
His clinical interests are echocardiography, cardiovascular rehabilitation and preventive cardiology, and sports cardiology. He treats cardiovascular rehabilitation, coronary artery disease, abnormal cardiac rhythms, heart failure and high blood pressure/cholesterol/obesity/diabetes management. He also has a keen interest in aviation cardiology, specifically in the evaluation and certification of aircrew with cardiac conditions.
Prior to private practice, Dr Koh was previously a senior consultant cardiologist at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS). He is currently a visiting consultant at both NHCS and Changi Aviation Medicine Centre (part of Changi General Hospital), where he is involved in the medical certification of civilian aircrew at the Changi Aviation Medicine Centre.
He graduated from the National University of Singapore and obtained a postgraduate diploma in aviation medicine from King’s College London, UK. He also completed his examination in special competence in adult echocardiography awarded by the National Board of Echocardiography, USA. He has been practising medicine for more than 20 years.
As a qualified aviation medicine practitioner in the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) in his early career, Dr Koh contributed to projects in aeromedical training and selection-and-certification of aircrew for flying-related activities. He is an appointed medical assessor of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore’s Medical Board (CAMB) and conducts regular medical board reviews for commercial aircrew and civilian air traffic controllers, in addition to providing cardiovascular specialist advice to the CAMB for complex cases. He is Asia-Pacific region’s only dual-accredited specialist in cardiology and aviation medicine, and has performed and interpreted more than 10,000 advanced echocardiography studies since 2019.
He was the immediate past director of the NHCS-Singapore Armed Forces Cardiac Fitness Centre. He was involved in the development and operationalisation of clinical policies and protocols for comprehensive cardiovascular screening and pre-participation fitness assessment for National Service (NS) pre-enlistees, active regulars and operationally-ready NSmen.
Besides his clinical work, Dr Koh remains as an adjunct assistant professor with Duke-NUS Medical School, and holds an adjunct teaching appointment in the SingHealth cardiovascular academic clinical programme.
