Dr Kong specialises in the management of adult cancers, with special interests in gastrointestinal / liver cancers, breast cancers and lung cancers. Prior to the founding of HL Kong Medical Oncology Centre in 2005, he was Associate Professor of Medicine / Oncology at the National University Hospital. He was also the Executive Director of Singapore's Biomedical Research Council and Deputy Director of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
After receiving his medical degree (MBBS) from the National University of Singapore in 1988, Dr Kong obtained the Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) as well as his Membership to the Royal Colleges of Physicians (United Kingdom) in 1993. He underwent post-graduate medical fellowship training at the New York Hospital - Cornell Medical Center, USA between 1995 and 1997. In 1998, he received his specialist qualification in Medical Oncology and was elected to be a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.
Dr Kong received his Masters of Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA in 2002. He was elected to be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh, UK) in 2004. Achievements and Accolades.
Dr Kong has won numerous international and national awards including the National Day Award, Singapore Youth Award, Singapore Academy of Science Young Scientist Award, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology Merit Award.
Dr Kong was the past Chairman of the Chapter of Medical Oncologists and the Deputy Chairman of the Ministry of Health's Specialist Training Committee in Medical Oncology.
