Dr Lau Chien Li Cheryl is a general surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and Parkway East Hospital, Singapore.
Her subspecialties are in colorectal surgery, laparoscopic surgery and endoscopy.
She graduated from National University of Singapore (NUS) and obtained her fellowship diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She then completed her advanced surgical training in National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Dr Lau has experience in minimally invasive colorectal and general surgical procedures including hernias, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies, treatment of colorectal cancer and benign colorectal diseases, complex perianal disorders and bowel disorders.
She was awarded the Human Manpower Development Programme by Ministry of Health in 2011. Dr Lau completed a year of advanced colon and rectal surgery training at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the US. During her fellowship, she became well-versed in the endoscopic and surgical management of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus.
Dr Lau is currently an international member of both the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
As one of the surgeons for the Jurong Health campus (National University Health services), Dr Lau was a founding member of the colorectal surgery division and the surgical trauma lead in Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH). She was actively involved in hospital planning and chaired the general surgery division of the peer review-learning, morbidity clinical audit and electronic medical records governance committees among others. Dr Lau was also appointed chief surgeon and steered the hospital to its earliest successful completion of the Ministry of Health Emergency Preparedness Mass Casualty exercise in 2018.
Passionate in teaching of the next generation of surgeons, Dr Lau was the residency programme director for Surgery-in-general Residents and the research director lead for surgery in NTFGH. She is currently a clinical lecturer with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS.
She is also an instructor for the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course and a teacher for the national Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons Viva course for training surgeons. She received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in undergraduate teaching and the Best Teacher (Surgery) Award in JurongHealth Campus.
Dr Lau was awarded hospital research grants for clinical quality research in 2015 – 2017. She has also authored numerous research articles and book chapters, including 2 publications in the prestigious Annals of Surgery Journal and is an invited reviewer for many international journals.
Placing patient-centred care as her mission, Dr Lau has received yearly awards for her clinical care including Service Ambassador awards from 2012 – 2016 and Service Quality Champion in 2017. She believes in holistic patient care and in providing quality outcomes for her patients.
