Dr Zena Lim is a USA fellowship trained Consultant Ophthalmologist and Adult & Paediatric Eye Surgeon. She is the Medical Director of the Focal Eye Centre and Co-director of The Children’s Eye & ENT Centre.
Besides being proficient in all aspects of general ophthalmology, including laser procedures, customized cataract surgery, glaucoma and diabetic/degenerative eye management , Dr Zena Lim has special interests in squint (“strabismus”) surgery for adults and children and in various aspects of paediatric opthalmology.
Dr Zena Lim embarked on her medical training with the National University of Singapore in 1995, followed by residency training in Ophthalmology at the Singapore National Eye Centre. She graduated top of her cohort in 2004, with the “Gold Medal in Ophthalmology” award in the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) examinations. This subsequently led to Fellowship accreditation in Ophthalmology by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK.
In 2004-2005, she trained under the tutelage of Prof Alex Levin, at the renowned Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. Upon completion of fellowship training in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus with the Singapore National Eye Centre, she was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan scholarship by the Ministry of Health to further hone her clinical skills at the Duke University Eye Centre, USA. There, she worked alongside Professors Edward Buckley and Sharon Freedman, international leaders in Ophthalmology in the fields of complex strabismus (“squints”), paediatric cataract and paediatric glaucoma.
Dr Zena Lim has presented and lectured at many international, regional and local conferences, and is first author of numerous peer-reviewed indexed medical journals. In 2010, she was awarded “Best of the Anterior Segment Specialty Meetings” at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting for her research in paediatric cataract.
Besides her passion for clinical practice, Dr Zena Lim believes in the importance of training the next generation of ophthalmologists. As a Core Faculty member of the Ophthalmology Residency Program at the Singapore National Eye Centre, she was actively involved in curriculum planning, residency teaching and cataract surgery training. She also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and was part of the Clinical Faculty Scheme at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Singapore. Previously a consultant with the “Cataract & Comprehensive” and “Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus” Services at the Singapore National Eye Centre, she is currently Visiting Consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital where her main role is imparting clinical and surgical skills to young aspiring ophthalmologists.
