Dr Nor Azhari is a urologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
His subspecialties are endourology and kidney stone disease. His other interest is in laparoscopic surgery for both malignant and benign conditions of the urinary tract.
He was a senior consultant urologist and director of endourology/urinary stone service at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He was also a senior consultant in the division of surgery and surgical oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore.
Dr Azhari graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and completed his urology training at SGH. He did his fellowship training in laparoscopic surgery and endourology at Westmead Hospital, Australia.
He has been practising medicine for more than 20 years. He is the earliest urologist in Singapore to perform ultrasound-guided puncture of the kidney in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) surgery, which significantly reduces the risk of intraoperative complications, and has performed a high number of this surgery for large or complex kidney stones. As part of his comprehensive treatment for kidney stones, he also performs metabolic evaluation and advises on preventive strategies.
He was involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and held assistant professor appointments at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine NUS and Duke-NUS Medical School.
He is still involved in training urologists both locally and around the region in kidney stone surgery. He has served as invited speaker as well as course director for surgical workshops locally and overseas. Dr Azhari is the founding course director for the SGH Retrograde intra-renal surgery hands-on workshop for regional urologists.
He is a recipient of the SGH Long Service Award (20 years).
