Dr Ong Hean Yee is a cardiologist practising at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore. He has special clinical and research interests in the areas of cardiac screening, lipidaemia, exercise testing, heart failure and advanced cardiac imaging.
Dr Ong is a highly experienced clinician with more than 20 years of clinical experience in public hospitals including 7 years in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom and 15 years in public hospitals in Singapore.
He graduated from Queen’s University of Belfast, UK in 1994. He obtained his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1998 and worked as a research fellow at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast from 1998 to 2000. He completed his advanced specialty training in cardiology in 2004 at the National University Hospital, Singapore, and in 2006, became a Fellow in Advanced Cardiac Imaging at the Cleveland Clinic, USA, on a Human Manpower Development Program (HMDP) scholarship from the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Singapore. He obtained his board certification in echocardiography (ASCeXAM) in the same year.
Dr Ong set up the Division of Cardiology in Alexandra Hospital in 2007, which grew into a Department in 2010. He was appointed Head of the Department of Cardiology in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) in 2010. Under his leadership at KTPH and with the help of his team of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, the department rapidly established services such as electrophysiology, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, heart failure, cardiac rehabilitation, percutaneous coronary intervention and clinical research.
Dr Ong is a senior clinical lecturer at the National University of Singapore and core faculty member of the NHG-AHPL Cardiology Residency Programme. He has been invited as a speaker by several international cardiology societies. He has been involved in and has led many industry and investigator initiated clinical research studies since 1998.
Dr Ong sits on the Domain Specific Review Board which oversees the ethical conduct of clinical trials. He is presently both Vice Chairman of the Chapter of Cardiology and Vice President of Singapore Cardiac Society. He was appointed Chairman of the MOH's treadmill licensing committee in 2014 and was part of the MOH's Writing Committee on Good Clinical Practice in Heart Failure.
Dr Ong supports the Singapore Ireland Fund, which is a charitable organisation that have helped, amongst others young people with special needs and Elder Care in Singapore. He has close links with the Singapore Medical Society of Ireland and helps to arrange local fellowships for Singaporeans in Ireland.
