Dr Ong Joo Haw is a sports medicine physician at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
His specialty is in sports and exercise medicine, while his special interests are ultrasound-guided interventions, shockwave therapy, and strength and conditioning. He treats acute injuries and chronic degenerative conditions.
Dr Ong was previously the director and senior consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital’s (KTPH) Sports & Medicine Centre, where he saw a wide variety of people doing recreational sports to elite athletes across age groups and sporting disciplines.
He graduated from the National University of Singapore and obtained his master’s there as well. He is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK and is a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He has post-graduate qualifications in occupational medicine and is a designated workplace doctor of the Ministry of Manpower.
He was awarded a double fellowship from the Ministry of Health in musculoskeletal ultrasound-guided interventions and high-performance sports medicine at the London Independent Hospital, UK and the Australian Institute of Sport, Australia. He has been practising medicine for more than 20 years and has performed more than 3000 musculoskeletal ultrasound and guided procedures since 2011.
Dr Ong has published multiple peer-reviewed medical journals and oversees research activities at various institutional review boards. He is also an invited faculty to various local and overseas conferences and courses, particularly surrounding the topic on musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Besides his clinical work, he is involved in both under- and post-graduate teaching. He serves on the sports medicine advanced specialty training committee as a programme director of the Alexandra Academy for Clinical & Emergency Sonography musculoskeletal ultrasound course and as a site director for various residency programmes. He was also appointed as the programme director for the inaugural national sports medicine residency programme.
