Dr Desmond Ooi is a general surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
His specialty is in vascular surgery. He also has special interests in varicose veins, diabetic foot disease, deep vein thrombosis, and aorta/carotid disease.
He has more than 15 years of experience in vascular and general surgery.
He is a former senior consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH). There, Dr Ooi played an instrumental role in the set-up of the vascular department. He also held leadership positions where he was accountable for clinical safety and risk management. His team was awarded a Public Health Grant from the National Healthcare Group to streamline diabetic foot care, which led to the establishment of the diabetic foot service at KTPH.
Besides his clinical work, he was an adjunct assistant professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He has been awarded multiple awards for his teaching.
Dr Ooi graduated from the University of Southampton, UK. He completed his specialist training in general surgery in Singapore. He was then awarded a Health Manpower Developmental Plan Award and subsequently did his specialised training in vascular and endovascular surgery in the UK. In his training, he focused on evidence-based and innovative ways to treat an array of vascular diseases. He has a master’s degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK.
He has also been invited to provide expert knowledge and advice, and contributed content to the media including Channel NewsAsia, Love 97.2 FM and Capitol 95.8 FM.
Dr Ooi is a recipient of the Yishun Health Long Service Award.
