Dr Charles Tan is a general surgeon with 18 years of clinical experience. His subspecialty interest is in endocrine surgery and endoscopic hernia repairs.
Dr Tan obtained his medical degree from Leicester University in the United Kingdom. He completed his general surgery training in Singapore at the National University Hospital. Following that, he pursued his subspeciality training at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, New South Wales.
As Head of the Endocrine Surgery Division in NUH, Dr Tan started the robotic axillary thyroid surgery programme. He currently has the most experience in thyroid surgery via the axillary in Singapore. Apart from comprehensive treatment of thyroid cancers, other new procedures that Dr Tan performs include minimally invasive parathyroid surgery under local anaesthesia and key-hole adrenal surgery (trans-abdominal or retroperitoneal)
Dr Tan is currently the president of the Singapore Hernia Society. He has performed more than 1,000 cases, of which 90% of cases are performed via key-hole. He regularly conducts courses and master classes to share his expertise with fellow colleagues.
Dr Tan also has a strong passion for teaching. He has been voted the best tutor at the Department of Surgery every year and still holds a position as a visiting consultant and adjunct assistant professor at the National University Hospital. To further contribute to medical education, he has written a best-seller OSCE book for students.
