Dr Paul Zhao is an ophthalmologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, Singapore.
His sub-specialty is in vitreo-retinal disease. He performs retina surgery for conditions such as retinal detachment, macular holes and epiretinal membranes, diabetic eye disease (tractional retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage) and vitreomacular traction.
He also has a special interest in the management of subluxed and dislocated lenses, and the use of sutureless techniques for the scleral fixation of intraocular lenses.
He also performs cataract surgery and is trained in the latest technology using femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and the use of premium intraocular lenses for correction of astigmatism and presbyopia.
Dr Zhao is a former senior consultant in the department of ophthalmology at the National University Hospital, and concurrently was the head of ophthalmology at Alexandra Hospital. He was also previously the head of the vision performance centre at the SAF Military Medicine Institute. He is currently a visiting senior consultant at Ng Teng Fong Hospital’s department of ophthalmology.
Dr Zhao graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He then went on to do basic and advanced specialty training in ophthalmology before pursuing his retina fellowship at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong.
Besides his clinical work, he held the position of assistant professor at NUS. He has been practising medicine for over 15 years, and has performed more than 3,000 cataract surgeries since 2006 and more than 1,000 retina surgeries since 2012.
