Migraine - Diagnosis & Treatment

How is a migraine diagnosed?

Migraines are primarily diagnosed based on clinical history and symptom description. A doctor may perform a physical and neurological examination to rule out other causes of headaches. Sometimes, imaging tests like an MRI or CT scan are necessary to exclude other neurological conditions that can cause headaches.

How is a migraine treated?

Migraine treatment aims to relieve symptoms and prevent additional attacks. Treatment may include:

  • Pain-relieving medications, such as NSAIDs or triptans, taken at the onset of symptoms
  • Preventative medications, which are taken regularly to reduce the severity or frequency of migraines over a period of time.
  • Lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes and the introduction of a regular exercise regime
  • Alternative therapies, such as acupuncture or biofeedback
